Allergies and asthma are two conditions that can be especially resistant to treatment and frustrating for a physician. Dr. Anne Szpindor, a clinical consultant for WholeHealthMD, has been treating allergies and asthma in adults and children since 1984, and integrative medicine has given her a much broader range of healing options. Dr. Szpindor partnered her Oak Park, Illinois-based practice with American WholeHealth from 1998-2000.

"I consider myself an integrative allergist," she says. "In addition to my traditional medical training, I've been using other modalities for the past several years, including such therapies as nutritional supplements, elimination diets and many other holistic treatments." She and her colleagues now also refer patients to such practitioners as chiropractors, massage therapists, acupuncturists, behavioral psychologists and homeopaths.

Another key to her successful allergy treatment is working with a patient to identify as many allergens as possible so the patient can avoid them. She also pays attention to other factors that can affect the immune system, including stress, hormones, poor nutrition, negative emotions and environmental toxins. Patients are treated with the latest medications, injections and supplement formulations.
