A conventionally trained physician, Dr. Reed has been involved with alternative medicine since the late 1970s. Today, he is among a handful of American physicians recognized for their interdisciplinary clinical skill - which, in Dr. Reed's case, include acupuncture, cranial osteopathy and homeopathy. Before joining American WholeHealth, a integrative medicine start-up company in 1996, Dr. Reed spent two decades in the Phoenix area, managing and directing a successful physician-based HMO, creating an integrative private practice, and joining one of the first alternative-medicine managed-care provider groups in the country.

Dr. Reed says, "I started on my path to becoming a specialist in integrative medicine by listening to my patients. They would ask about vitamins I had no knowledge of, so I studied those vitamins. Somebody's arthritis pain went away with homeopathy, so I got curious about that. A patient once brought me a book on candida overgrowth syndrome so we worked together to find a candida program that actually helped her. Beyond this, I've also helped teach other doctors over the years about finding ways in which alternative therapies can work in their practices too."

Dr. Reed's career with American WholeHealth led to his position in 2007 as SeniorVP and Chief Medical Officer for Healthways, where he managed the professional aspects of WholeHealthMD and Healthways WholeHealth Networks. He has served as member of the editorial board of the journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine,  as a consultant for TimeLife Books, has written and edited material for the Office of Alternative Medicine at the National Institutes of Health, and has been a consultant to the Integrative Medicine program at the University of Maryland. He has matriculated at Harvard Divinity School to pursue studies in spirituality and health care delivery.

He has long been active in developing and promoting quality control for physicians and alternative-medicine practitioners, and is also a highly regarded teacher, lecturer and spokesperson for alternative health care. He has clinical practice affiliations at the Kaplan Clinic in Arlington , VA. , and at WholeHealth New England, in Arlington, MA.

"I firmly believe each person can find a healing path appropriate to their beliefs, physical and emotional needs, and current life situation. I want to offer patients the best of both conventional and complementary therapies," he says.
