Keith Berndtson, M.D.
Special interests:
Dr. Berndtson is very involved in treating fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome and male menopause. He says: "With chronic illness, it is important to understand that biography influences biology. Time must be taken to listen to the story of how an illness unfolded, to explore its meanings, and place the story in the context of a healing path that fits the patient's goals and needs."

After an intensive stint as a conventionally trained physician, Dr. Berndtson can quickly cut to the essence of integrated medicine: "The focus of an integrative approach is more on the patient than on the disease," he says succinctly. And he vividly remembers his own personal realization that his by-the-book medical approach might need some revising.

"I was seeing one of my patients, a senior executive with a Fortune 100 company and one of the smartest people I've ever met," he recalls. "I had just recommended he see a surgeon for his back pain. He shot back the observation that one of his colleagues had avoided back surgery through alternative medicine."

"He then leaned in close to my face and observed, 'Our companies pay a great deal for answers to our employees' health problems and yet we have to go outside the system and pay again for answers that work. Isn't it your job to know what the options are?' He was totally right, and ever since that day, I have been committed to improving patient access to integrative medicine."

Dr. Berndtson  was a clinical consultant for WholeHealthMD, and served as Chicago Regional Medical Director for American WholeHealth and Co-director of the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Clinic at the American WholeHealth Lincoln Park Center in Chicago.

He has written extensively about mind-body medicine, acupuncture, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and integrative medicine, and his articles and reviews have appeared in such publications as the prestigious Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), The Caregiver Journal, The CFIDS Chronicle and the Current Review of Alternative Medicine.
