Monica Myklebust was raised in a small iron mining community in the woods of northern Minnesota. Fascinated with Nature, she loved Biology. After university she worked in clinical then research genetics laboratories at the University of California San Francisco. An opportunity to live in mainland China presented and there she lived and taught physicians English and American culture for one year. Amidst the poverty of options available to her Chinese friends, she felt compelled to actualize her potential by taking full advantage of the possibilities for further education at home. She returned to prepare for medical school at the University of Minnesota. Following Family Medicine residency at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine, she practiced in an urban Minneapolis clinic with hospital and nursing home responsibilities. With five years of practical experience, she moved to Tucson to participate in the residential fellowship at the Program in Integrative Medicine directed by Andrew Weil at the University of Arizona for two years. In 2003 she was recruited to lead University of Michigan Integrative Medicine Clinical Services which involved establishment and provision of patient services combining the best of conventional and alternative therapies. She wrote policy to guide the institution of acupuncture and massage into academic health systems. Dr. Myklebust is devoted to offering the best health care possible to the people she serves and is proud to be a family physician. She believes that Integrative Medicine presents possibilities to optimize health care through expanding diagnostic and treatment options suitable for our global society, underscoring the importance of therapeutic relationship in healing, and by harnessing the power of collaboration and collegiality.
